'The Culex Experiment' (5 Parts) by Lee Pressman

While cycling to school, Kevin witnesses the abduction of a man in a white lab-coat by two motorcyclists wearing protective suits. Having met up with Megabyte, Kevin attempts to telephone the police, but a mosquito bites him and he immediately falls into a coma. Sensing his friend’s distress Adam joins Megabyte and together they take Kevin to nearby St. Mary’s hospital, where he is placed on life support by Doctor Poole. After meeting Kevin’s aunt, veterinarian Ruth Tanner, Adam and Megabyte help the gruff and highly sceptical Police Inspector Platt with his enquiries. Also at the hospital is Ami, a young girl visiting her mother, who is recovering from an appendectomy; Ami is a latent Tomorrow Person, and when she senses Kevin’s trauma she is drawn to his bedside, where she meets Adam and Megabyte. The two mysterious motorcyclists arrive at the hospital, render Doctor Poole unconscious and then steal Adam’s blood sample, narrowly missing Ami as they make their getaway on their motorbike and sidecar. While a recovered Doctor Poole informs the inspector that he was attacked by twins, Adam and Megabyte take Ami to the spaceship buried under the South Pacific island beach. The next day, Ruth receives a visit from a young girl named Jade, whose dog, Bonnie, has become inexplicably comatose. Adam and Megabyte use a mind merge to glean the number plate of the twins’ motorbike from Ami’s memories of the getaway; the trio head for the police station, but when Inspector Platt refuses to listen to their story a frustrated Megabyte uses the station computer to find the motorcycle’s registered address. After Platt agrees to pay a call on the owner – one ‘Ms Jeffries’ – they arrive at the woman’s country house and are shown in by Ms Jeffries’ servants; two creepy twins; they then meet the twins’ sinister employer, who explains that her motorbike and sidecar was recently stolen. Having discovered that Bonnie is suffering from the same affliction as Kevin, Ruth takes a blood sample to Doctor Poole for analysis. Adam and Megabyte learn that Jade was near Ms Jeffries’ house when her dog fell ill; the two boys teleport into the grounds, but are spotted by Ms Jeffries on her surveillance system and attacked by a sonic weapon, forcing them to teleport back to Ruth’s. The twins strike again, kidnapping Ami and Bonnie, as well as Doctor Poole and the blood samples. Adam and Megabyte turn to Megabyte’s father, General Damon, for help; the general is currently acting as head of security at the World Scientist Convention, the highlight of which will be a demonstration of the Cornucopia machine by its inventor, Doctor Conrad; this revolutionary device is capable of duplicating anything placed inside it, and could potentially end world hunger. Meanwhile, Ami finds herself a prisoner of Ms Jeffries – actually the infamous mad scientist known as Doctor Culex; it seems that Culex has been experimenting on mosquitoes, and has biologically engineered a new poisonous strain with the aim of creating the ultimate predator. By stealing Doctor Conrad’s duplication machine the insane Doctor Culex intends to create a huge swarm of killer mosquitoes, which she will use to destroy all life on the planet – but first, she will give Ami a personal demonstration of her mosquitoes’ deadly bite…
